Building a Campus Network: Lessons from Managing 200+ Users

Managing a university campus network presents unique challenges that go far beyond what you encounter in a typical small office or home network setup. Over the past two years as ICT Officer at Exploits University, Mzuzu Campus, I have been responsible for a network serving over 200 users across multiple buildings, including lecture halls, computer labs, administrative offices, and staff housing. In this article, I share the practical strategies, tools, and lessons learned from managing this infrastructure.

Understanding the Campus Network Landscape

A university campus is essentially a small town. You have diverse user groups with different needs: students who stream video and access learning management systems, lecturers who need reliable connections for research and online teaching, administrative staff processing student records, and visitors who require temporary access. Balancing these competing demands within limited budgets is the central challenge of campus network management.

At Exploits University, the network infrastructure consists of a fiber backbone connecting three main buildings, with Gigabit Ethernet switches at each distribution point, and Wi-Fi access points deployed strategically across high-traffic areas. The internet connection comes through a dedicated fiber link, which we manage carefully to ensure equitable bandwidth distribution.
